Graduation day is one of the most memorable moments in a student's life and the graduation cap and tassel play a huge part in the ceremony. The tradition of moving the tassel from the right to the left side of the cap signifies the transition from student to graduate. When you’re getting ready to celebrate this momentous occasion, you should know how to put a tassel on a graduation cap. The team at Tassel Depot is here to guide you through the process with our step-by-step instructions.

What Do You Need for the Complete Graduation Picture?

To secure a tassel on a graduation cap, you'll need the following materials:

  • Graduation cap
  • Graduation tassel
  • Thread Needle
  • Pair of scissors

Once the materials are acquired, learning how to put graduation tassels on caps is an easy task.

Step-by-Step Instructions to Secure the Tassel on a Graduation Cap

  1. Prepare Your Work Area: Place your graduation cap on a flat surface with the mortarboard (the flat top of the cap) facing up.
  2. Prepare the Tassel: Locate the cord at the top of the graduation tassel.
  3. Thread the Needle: Insert the thread through the eye of the needle and knot the end.
  4. Attach the Tassel: Carefully insert the needle through the cord on the tassel. Loop the thread and tie a knot.
  5. Position the Tassel: Hold the tassel in one hand and the cap in the other. Wrap the thread around the button in the center of the cap and loop the tassel cord around the button as well.
  6. Secure the Tassel: Hold the button firmly against the cap while using the other hand to bring the needle and thread through the top of the cap. Pull the needle and thread through to the other side of the cap.
  7. Finish the Attachment: Tie a knot in the thread on the inside of the cap and cut off any excess thread with the scissors.
  8. Move the Tassel: On graduation day, move the tassel to the opposite side of the cap to signify your graduation.

Tips for Putting on Your Graduation Tassel

  • Correct Side: Ensure you attach the tassel to the right side of the cap initially, as it is usually worn on the right side and then moved to the left during the ceremony.
  • Color Coding: Graduation tassels are often color-coded based on the degree or level of education. Select the appropriate color for your tassel.
  • Seek Assistance: If you're having trouble attaching the tassel, don’t hesitate to ask a friend or family member for help. Help from an extra set of hands can make the process less stressful.
