How to Get an Honor Cord

Graduation cords can be given for a variety of reasons. Typical reasons include certain academic achievements and membership to certain honor societies, fraternities, sororities, and school clubs. Some schools provide students with grad ropes during major events in their college experience, such as freshman convocation or ceremonies conducted by specific departments. They are also given to high achieving students, with most universities and high schools awarding one pair of cords for students that meet the criteria of cum laude, two pairs awarded to graduates meeting the requirements of magna cum laude, and three pairs awarded to students that qualify for summa cum laude. Other times clubs and groups will supply personalized cords, such as National Honor Society cords. 

While schools and organizations may hand out honor cords to students, they can also be purchased to ensure you stand out during your graduation ceremony! With graduation caps, gowns, and tassels usually being the same color, customizable honor cords can be a great way to make sure your family and friends can spot you in the crowd. Glossary of Graduation Cords

Single Honor Cords – These cords are one solid color and feature only one rope. At Tassel Depot, solid honor cords can come in a single color or a patterned color like our specialty Kente or rainbow cords.

Braided Honor Cords – These types of single cords are made up of two colors twisted together. Tassel Depot offers a variety of two-color and even three-color combinations. Custom combinations are welcome!

Double-Tied Honor Cords – These pairs of cords feature two different cords knotted together in the middle. One cord can be single while the other is braided or both cords can be the same type of cord. Pairs can come in different colors or the same colors. If you need double-tied graduation cords, make sure to request cords be tied together in your order instructions to Tassel Depot.

Standard Honor Cords – These cords are made up of 54-inch twisted rope with two 4-inch chainette tassels at each end. Total length equals 62 inches.

Premium Honor Cords – These cords are made up of 60-inch twisted rope with two 4-inch premium tassels on each end. Total length equals 68 inches.

Charms – These are small tags typically made of metal attached to honor cords just above the tassels. Charms typically show the year of a specific graduating class. They can also be Greek letters signifying a specific fraternity or sorority. Club logos or religious symbols are also popular options. Tassel Depot also welcomes custom charm designs.
